Foodies

In my family, food is the language of love. As an immigrant, the first thing that brings me right back to home is food. It connects me to my heritage and to my parents who still reside in China. I paint food as a way to commemorate and remember where I come from.

The Right Soy Sauce, Acrylic, 18’’x24’’, 2019

My parents almost exclusively use soy sauce to cook and season. My dad always gets fresh shrimps from the market and steams them, and I will dip them into soy sauce. When I moved to the US, I have tried to recreate the dishes my parents made, and they never taste right unless I found this soy sauce. It reminds me of my Cantonese heritage, home and my parents’ love.

Mung Bean Popsicle, Acrylic, 5.5’’x11.5’’, 2019

I painted this mung bean popsicle to commemorate my grandmother, who passed away when I was in college and I was not able to attend her funeral. One of the most memorable moments I had with my grandmother was eating mung bean popsicles after I got home from school, so I thought it appropriate to have it as the subject matter.
